Preview of Yahoo! Messenger Theme "TheDark"

The new Yahoo! Messenger beta is working well for me, and the fact that it supports themes is an interesting development.

At this time, I haven't found any useful documentation online on how to create new themes for the Mac client, but I've modified the "Default" theme to have some darker elements, calling it "TheDark".

Once it is complete, I'll post my Yahoo! Messenger theme "TheDark" here for free download, but for now, here is a preview:

Megazoomer - Make Any OS X App Fullscreen

Megazoomer makes windows full-screen on OS X. Just press Command-Return, and the front-most window grows to fill your entire monitor, covering the Dock and menu bar. Press the same keys, and it shrinks again.

Like many other OS X modifications, Megazoomer requires SIMBL, a free InputManager available here.

Megazoomer is a free download. Get it here.

Customize Safari's Error Page

This tip involves replacing the image that displays on Safari's error page. The default Safari compass icon can be changed to whatever you like.

The image I use is a small portrait of Homer Simpson. If you want to use it, download it here. Unzip the file.

(If you prefer to use your own creation, it needs to be named "error-page-icon.tif", saved as a TIFF file with .tif extension, and it should have either a white or a transparent background.)

In your Applications folder, Control-click (right-click for those with a 2-button mouse) on Safari and choose "Show Package Contents".

Giving Safari's Error Page A Friendlier Face - Method

Drill down through the 'Contents' folder and open the folder marked 'Resources'. Drop the unzipped file into the 'Resources' folder.

When the Finder asks you if you want to replace the already-existing file, simply click on 'Replace'.

Close the window and run Safari. The next time an error occurs you should get your first view of your custom icon.

To test it you can type in a non-working link such as http://woksrule.com.

Screen Spanning Doctor Updated For Tiger

On our links list, we link to an individual's free software which allows certain 'hobbled' Macs to use a true 'dual display', or spanning, setup.

He has posted an update for the program for Tiger users, available directly at this link:

Screen Spanning Doctor (Tiger) v.0.3.3

Basically, this program allows some models of iBook, eMac, and iMac to use a second display as a true second display, not simply mirroring the main display on the external screen. (These Macs are shipped as hobbled to help differentiate the need for PowerBooks, which have inbuilt spanning capability)

Change Your Login Screen's Background

This is a quick and simple resedit to provide a custom login screen desktop picture.

Change the file found in Macintosh HD -> Library -> Desktop Pictures named 'Aqua Blue.jpg' to your delight.
If you wish, simply replace the file with one of your own. Make sure to rename it 'Aqua Blue.jpg' (without the quotes) or it won't work.
