Internet and NetworkRegarding the World Wide Web and anything network-related. Universal Yahoo! Messenger Beta 2 Now Available![]() Yahoo! has released their second universal beta of Yahoo! Messenger. Included in the update are more emoticons, theme choices (albeit limited for the moment), automatic message archiving, tabbed chat windows, and access to Yahoo! chat rooms. Why use the official client instead of the (admittedly awesome) Adium? For me, mainly webcam support, and a hope that voice chat will one day be included. I'm in the process of working on a new theme for it, which will be posted here when it's complete. Control iTunes Over A NetworkiTunes Remote Control lets you control another machine's iTunes playback over a network. iTRC is a Universal application, so it will run on (and between) Intel and PowerPC Macs seamlessly. It is free and open source. ![]() Setup is simple, just enable Remote Apple Events (System Preferences->Sharing) on the computer that is running iTunes. Make sure there's a network name entered in the 'Computer Name' field. Open iTRC on the computer you want to use as the remote control, and type in the network name of the iTunes server. Authenticate with the username and password of the currently logged-in user of the iTunes server computer, and you're off to the races. It provides support for track changing, playlist and EQ selection, and control of Shuffle and Repeat functions. It also includes Growl support. Works (for me) with iTunes 6 and 7. Gotchas: -Make sure to add ".local" to the end of the iTunes server's network name. Universal Yahoo! Messenger Now Available![]() The new Yahoo! Messenger has arrived and is a Universal Binary, ready to run on both Intel and Power PC machines. Built around a redesigned buddy list with a sliding webcam pane, it sports a number of interface enhancements, including (for the first time) support for custom user avatars. .Mac Bandwidth Limits UpdatedApple posted an updated page detailing their data transfer limits on their .mac blog. From the page, "The .Mac bandwidth data transfer limit is currently set at 10 GB per month." ![]() The 'add more' options, in Canadian dollars. I've got my own hosting, so I don't need the extra space or bandwidth. The default allocation of 1 GB is plenty of room to back up my purchased music, bookmarks, mail settings, and important documents. Better Surfing With SafariFirst off, go to the View menu and select both the 'Status Bar' and 'Text Size' items. The status bar is at the bottom of each page, and will help you see what type of link you're clicking on, usually with a description of what type of action, if any, the window will take. Next, choose 'Preferences' from the Safari menu and select 'Tabbed Browsing.' Check the box needed to enable tabbed browsing. You may wish to use Panther's Keyboard & Mouse Preference Pane to modify the keyboard shortcuts for the Next Tab and Previous Tab commands to something more convenient than the default Command-Shift Right Arrow/Left Arrow. Master Your MessagingA number of instant messaging programs are available for OS X; AOL Instant Messenger (or AIM, the protocol used for Apple's iChat), ICQ, Yahoo Messenger, and MSN Messenger are among the most well-known ones. |
