You probably don't want to buy Norton (updated)Update : Added link to instructions on 'How to completely uninstall Symantec products' from macosxhints.com, August 29, 2005. - You probably don't want to buy anything from Symantec. Norton Utilities/FileSaver/SpeedDisk etc. can kill your machine. They dropped all support from their products after 10.3 came out, and they will not be updating their product line again. Be wary, as most Mac stores won't think twice about feigning ignorance just to make the sale. Many horror stories are available at a number of Mac-related sites, including macfixit.com and xlr8yourmac.com. Just go with this one, it will hurt your machine. Their support staff usually won't even tell you the truth about their 'compatibility'. As for Norton AntiVirus, they will continue to soak you for 'virus definition updates' through their LiveUpdate personal annoyance system, should you agree to pay. A yearly subscription cost, to be reminded every time it wants to check every disk, file, email or program that is put on your system that there is no threat? If you are forwarding a lot of emails to Windows colleagues and suspect that you receive a good many Windows viruses attached to emails, then an anti-virus program may be of use. The only reason to have it is to strip Windows viruses from outgoing emails. The Windows viruses in the spam junk mail you receive can not harm your Mac. Myself, I would rather my Windows-using friends have more reasons to switch to the Mac. ;) |
