Twelve Great Freeware Games for Mac OS X

Twelve games that have brought me enjoyment on my Macs, listed here for you, the reader.

Super Tux - A 2D side-scroller, Super Tux is a great time-waster, and with controls that work just like Super Mario Bros. (the first one for NES) it's got a lot of replayability. Best of all, it's free, like the rest of the games featured here.

Quinn - A Tetris clone in aqua, with network play. OS X 10.1 and up.

Amju - A 3D game where you must rotate and place blocks in the way of animals to guide them.

FUBAR The Game - A turn-based, overhead view space military-type game. Open source is you want to change game elements, and create new levels with the Map Editor. A good bit of fun for a rainy afternoon. Supports all operating systems with Java.

Shoot Things - A fun parody of a few choice retro games. It was created for an iDevGames contest, so the download includes the game source. OS X 10.2.5 and up.

Kiki The Nano Bot - A 3D puzzle game, definitely worth checking out.

The Story:

once upon a time, there were some tiny little robots living in the nano world.
they lived a happy artificial life busily collecting resources for the maker who made more and more tiny little robots.

but one day, a parasitic capacity destroyed the maker's master control program.
since then he is malfunctioning and only producing lazy stupid little robots which shoot each other and destroy the nano world.

your task is to help kiki, the only sane bot left over, to repair the maker.

Frozen Bubble - Fabian Renn ported this popular Linux game (like Bust-A-Move) so we could play with more penguins. Everybody loves penguins. Especially ones with level editors. OS X 10.3 and up. Get Linux and Windows builds at the official site.

Wire Hang Redux - A must-play arcade style game where you climb upwards by clicking with your mouse to toss your grappling hook. OS X 10.2 and up.

FloboPuyo - A PuyoPuyo (round coloured balls joined like Tetris pieces, with obstacles) clone. OS X 10.3 and up.

Ultimate Othello 1789 - A solid Othello game for OS X 10.3 and up.

BeeCells 3D - The object is to eliminate like-coloured balls on a Chinese Checkers-style board by coaxing them near each other.

Fish - Not so much a game, Fish is an aquarium simulator with many options, including some interesting camera adjustments. OS X 10.3 and up.

All of these programs were tested with OS X 10.4.3 and ran without issue. Some other games were considered, but would not run in Tiger and therefore weren't included. This article will be updated if any stability issues are discovered with further Tiger releases.
